“Alex, hey!” Lam stands from the spot he’d been crouched in, looking over the solid block head of the eiscue he recently caught—checking for cracks in the ice.[break][break]

He brushes his hands on his jacket, in a halfhearted attempt to rid them of some of the chill before he offers one to shake. “It’s been a minute—how’ve you been?”[break][break]

At the time, Lam hadn’t known quite who it was he’d encountered, nor the impact Alex had left on the region before he himself had ever arrived here.[break][break]

Now, he’s at least a little more clued into a few things.[break][break]

The mention of CIAN MAHER draws a laugh, “Nah, he’s not so bad. Good boss for the time I was there.” His hand flaps dismissively, easy going.[break][break]

“Not too bad! Can’t say I have any complaints. What brings you by?”

the halfhearted attempt is appreciated but the chill is still felt as the handshake is accepted. he finds that he doesn't mind it too much; it beats shaking a wet hand.[break][break]

“I can understand that,” Lam commiserates, though even as a gym leader he’s not sure he’s as busy as the other man. Didn’t he like, run a company or something to that effect? He’s not really sure now that he thinks about it–they’ve not really interacted since that chance encounter months back.[break][break]
Though falling into the gym circuit has definitely given him more knowledge on the name Alexander Stone, and who he was to region before.[break][break]
Well, before he was as he is now.[break][break]
Lam’s head tilts at the offer made, and a casual smile flits across his face. “Well, that’s pretty considerate of ya,” he says as he waves a hand for the other man to follow him into the gym proper.[break][break]
“Things have been pretty hectic, but extra hands-on training’s never a bad thing. Especially if an expert like yourself is offering.”

Lam’s head tilts, and a laugh follows– light-hearted and amused. “Reputable and humble. I’m not sure about that on my end, but I suppose we’ll see.”[break][break]
He doesn’t think his skill set is all that special. Never has. He just goes with what seems right. Okay, okay, maybe he thinks about strategy a little.[break][break]
His own expression lifts–a grin sweeps across his face. “Yes, let’s!” It’s an honor, really, even if Alex considers it no more than flattery. Lam mirrors the movement, slipping his decidueye’s pokeball from his pocket.[break][break]
The eiscue he’d been tending plops down by his feet. Contented to spectate.

alexander's intentions may not have been as innocent as he originally presented them to be. he is here to assist lam logan with whatever they may need, and also to assess, but he's also here to indulge in one of his wants, for he has been craving a good battle for a while now.[break][break]

it will also help him assess where he currently stands. are his battling abilities out of date? is he merely a relic of the past, better off behind a desk?[break][break]

Even if Alex had been up front with his intentions, Lam wouldn't have minded. Sure, training was important and all, but a good battle was still a battle. and he enjoyed the fun in them. So it wasn't as if the other man was making a big ask, or Lam needed an excuse to justify it.[break][break]

Needless to say, he's happy to oblige. And eager to test his mettle against a former champ.[break][break]

"Likewise!" Alexander's smile is met with the flash of a thumbs up. He turns his attention to the decidueye. "You heard 'em, Artie! Show 'em how it's done."[break][break]

The owl lets out a hoot, but doesn't immediately dive in. As the tentacruel sets up its defenses, Artichoke sweeps one wing in his own bid to set up a two-step attack. The sheen of light collects in his grasp - a SOLAR BLADE that condenses into sharper with each passing second.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Lam remains pleasant, curious. "You still do any of this all that often?"

sensing the urgency the SOLAR BLADE presents, tentacruel rushes forward, tentacles writhing along the ground before lashing out with a POISON JAB.[break][break]

his head shakes at lam logan's question.[break][break]

"this is actually my first since i returned."[break][break]

though he's been in battles in the rifts, this is the first casual training he's done with another.

Brandishing the fully formed SOLAR BLADE, the decidueye falls into a defensive stance, bracing as the tentacruel rushes him. Using the blade to parry the POISON JAB of a lashing tentacle, Artie twists around to break contact, and then bring the SOLAR BLADE swinging down on his opponent.[break][break]
"Oh, really? Sort of honored now, actually."[break][break]
He laughs, the remark lighthearted and not too serious.[break][break]
"It's sort of nice, isn't it? Not having to battle like your life is depending on it?"[break][break]
It's an awareness he carries every day now. Heavy on his shoulders.

fighting defensively, tentacruel sets up a BARRIER in time to lessen the blow of SOLAR BLADE. through this, it manages to stay slippery and avoidant, moving to the side before creating space and distance with another POISON JAB.[break][break]

The blade reverberates against the BARRIER and then shatters in a burst of light. The toxic jab clips against one of the decidueye’s talons as he too jumps back to create distance.[break][break]
A wince from the bird, but the toxin doesn’t immediately take. Not yet.[break][break]
Wings draw back in an archer’s pose next, and Artie soon sets loose the phantasmal spray of pointed SPIRIT SHACKLES in rapid succession to bind his foe.[break][break]
“I do,” Lam responds with a drawn sigh, “Admittedly more than I care for.”

“Neither do I,” he says, shaking his head. It’s bad enough, feeling the pressure that comes with the expectations from his position. “Was it like this when you were at the Rustboro gym?”[break][break]
The calls to arms, the need to fight so hard and so often.[break][break]
The decidueye tries to hold fast to the tethers he created, but the strain to do so grows greater as a SURF washes over him. Water soaks his feathers and weighs them down.[break][break]
Fed by the water that soaks into the earth, Artie summons a FRENZY PLANT that crawls across the ground in a frantic tangle toward Tentacruel.[break][break]
“I agree!” Lam’s voice grows brighter, relieved that someone is like-minded. “Without strategy and finesse, it’s just…”[break][break]
Gratuitous? Needless? Violence, all the same.

"no, not then. rustboro has always been self-sustaining, reliant on no one else in hoenn. that changed when rocket invaded; it had to change."[break][break]

the rustboro native followed in the footsteps of his father, inheriting not only their legacy but also their beliefs. harold stone helped shape rustboro into where they are now but he always knew the importance of partnerships. for all of rustboro's strengths, its biggest weakness was once its separation.[break][break]

tentacruel's SURF attempts to hold back the FRENZY PLANT but it cannot stop the inevitable.[break][break]

"looking back, it would be too convenient to think of the slateport invasion as the origin point that has led us to where we are now, but things are never that simple."[break][break]
